What is a sti file?
STI is the presentation template format from StarOffice, the office suite Oracle developed before eventually open-sourcing it as OpenOffice. Where SDD was the finished presentation, STI was the starting point — a pre-formatted template defining the consistent look and feel that new presentations would inherit.
StarImpress, StarOffice’s presentation application, used STI files the same way PowerPoint uses POT or POTX files. Build the master layout once, set the fonts, colors, header and footer formatting for title and content slides, save it as STI, and every new presentation built from it starts with that visual foundation already in place. Consistent branding without rebuilding from scratch each time.
STI shares the same lineage as SDD. Both formats came out of the StarOffice era, both were eventually superseded when the codebase was open-sourced and evolved into OpenOffice and later Apache OpenOffice. OTP replaced STI as the standard template format in that ecosystem, just as ODP replaced SDD for finished presentations.
Like SDD, STI is a format you’re only likely to encounter in old archives. No active software produces STI files today. The organizations and teams that used StarOffice either migrated to OpenOffice and LibreOffice years ago, bringing their files with them, or left those old templates behind entirely.
