What is a raw file?
A RAW file is exactly what the name suggests. Raw, unprocessed image data straight from your camera’s sensor. No compression, no in-camera adjustments, no quality loss. Just everything the sensor captured, preserved exactly as it was.
Think of it as the digital equivalent of a film negative. A JPEG is the finished print. A RAW file is what you work from before getting there. That’s why photographers shoot in RAW. You get full control over exposure, white balance, shadows, highlights, all of it, without permanently baking those decisions into the file.
The tradeoff is size and compatibility. RAW files are large, sometimes 50MB or more per shot. And there’s no single RAW format. Canon uses CR2 and CR3. Nikon uses NEF. Sony uses ARW.
