What is a psd file?

Format Extensions: .psd .psb

PSD stands for Photoshop Document. It’s the native file format Adobe Photoshop saves projects in. Every layer, mask, adjustment, text element, and vector shape stays intact and fully editable. Nothing gets flattened, nothing gets lost.

That’s what makes PSD the industry standard for designers and photographers. You can come back to a PSD weeks later and pick up exactly where you left off. Tweak a layer. Swap out text. Adjust a mask. The file holds the entire working history of a design, not just the finished output.

PSD files can be enormous. We’re talking gigabytes for complex projects. They support up to 30,000 pixels in height and width, which is why they’re used for everything from web mockups to billboard-sized print work. PSB (Photoshop Big) is the variant for projects that push past even PSD’s limits.

The catch is compatibility. PSD files need Photoshop, or at minimum a compatible app like Affinity Photo, to open properly. Send one to a client or copywriter who doesn’t have Creative Cloud and they’re stuck. The usual workaround is exporting a flat JPEG or PNG just for review, which means extra steps and extra files cluttering your project folder every time something changes.

ShareOtter skips that step. Share your PSD directly and recipients can preview the design in their browser, check details, and sign off on drafts without downloading anything or logging into Photoshop.

Applications that open .psd files

If you prefer to view these files offline on your computer or mobile device, the following software tools are recommended:

Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Illustrator
GIMP
Affinity Photo
Corel PaintShop Pro
Photopea

How to Share psd Images Online

Three steps. No account, no software, no waiting around.

Select or Drop your File

Drag your PSD into the upload box above, or click to browse. Either way works.

Select the file
Step 2

Let it upload

Watch the progress bar. Most PSD files are done in a few seconds. Bigger files can take a little longer.

Wait for file upload
Step 3

Copy your link

Done. Grab the link and send it anywhere. Slack, email, text, WhatsApp wherever your file needs to go.

Copy link and share

Everything You Need to Share Files, Nothing You Don't

Sharing a file shouldn't mean losing control of it the moment you hit upload.

Instant shareable link

Instant Shareable Link

Upload once, get a link instantly. No waiting on emails to send, no attachment size limits bouncing your file back — just a clean URL you can paste anywhere, ready the second your upload finishes.

Password protection

Password Protection

Lock any file behind a password before sharing. Only people with both the link and the password can open it, so sensitive files stay sensitive even if the link ends up somewhere you didn't intend.

Link expiry control

Link Expiry Control

Set a link to expire after a day, a week, or whatever window makes sense. Once it's gone, it's gone — no stale links floating around in old emails months later.

Comments for Feedback

Comments for Feedback

Let people comment directly on the file instead of replying in a separate email thread. Feedback stays attached to exactly what it's about, so nothing gets lost translating between a file and a conversation.

Collaborative Workspaces

Email-Gated Access

Restrict a file to specific people by email. They'll get a magic link to sign in and view it — no password to share, no guessing who actually opened your file.

No signup required

No Signup Required

Share a file in seconds without creating an account. Drop it, get your link, send it — sign up later only if you want to manage files long-term.
